Guangzhou, sometimes know outside China as Canton, is the capital of Guangdong province. China has become the world's factory, and Guangzhou has long been known as China's factory. As the epicenter of Cantonese language and food, its culture pervades Southern China and has reached far into Asia and America. Guangzhou's urban fabric is unique among Chinese cities. But like many other Chinese cities, Guangzhou has been expanding rapidly for at least a decade. Many unique parts of Guangzhou have been disappearing, as whole neighborhoods are replaced by modern development. And at the outer edges new town developments are springing up, as Chinese people get their first taste of suburban life. I'm an architect and teacher living in Guangzhou. My hometown is Saint Louis, Missouri, USA.
